ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an explorer, investigator, challenger, and creator. I make art because it gives me a platform to explore and understand myself as a female artist, my intimate and surrounding community, and God. Using internally driven movements and words, as well as externally driven concepts and themes, I am interested in opposites and contrasting images and ideas involved with humanity. I seek to juxtapose concepts like fear and freedom, temporal and eternal desires, and contrasting emotions such as humor and pain. I use words, images, and difficulties in my life to springboard my performers and audience members, as a way to sift through and solve the difficulties they may be facing in their own lives.
I seek to awaken the hearts of the suffering and to unearth these tribulations through movement, music, and words. I first challenge my performers to go to the deepest parts of their hearts and minds, to dig up their struggles, and to perform at an emotionally personal level. Seeing raw emotion and the willingness to be vulnerable influences viewers to reflect within themselves. I secondly aim to provoke and inspire the audience to face their own fears and confront what’s going on inside of them.
I am interested in an all-encompassing sensorial Dance Theater. Movement, music, text, song, painting, etc. offer unlimited possibilities for my creative mind to soar and explore. Through abstracting movement, gestures, words, vocals, lights, facial expressions, textured touch, taste and smell; I hope to activate, spark, and reconstruct the way audience members experience dance performance. I ultimately hope to activate the viewers senses, minds, hearts, and spirits.
